چکیده

We present a detailed analysis of a recently proposed perfectly matched layer (PML) method for the absorption of acoustic waves. The split set of equations is shown to be only weakly well-posed, and ill-posed under small low order perturbations. This analysis provides the explanation for the stability problems associated with the spilt field formulation and illustrates why applying a filter has a stabilizing effect. Utilizing recent results obtained within the context of electromagnetics, we develop strongly well-posed absorbing layers for the linearized Euler equations. The schemes are shown to be perfectly absorbing independent of frequency and angle of incidence of the wave in the case of a non-convecting mean flow. In the general case of a convecting mean flow, a number of techniques is combined to obtain a absorbing layers exhibiting PML-like behavior. The efficacy of the proposed absorbing layers is illustrated though computation of benchmark problems in aero-acoustics.

On Absorbing Boundary Conditions for Linearized Euler Equations by a Perfectly Matched Layer

Recently, Berenger introduced a Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) technique for absorbing electromagnetic waves. In the present paper, a perfectly matched layer is proposed for absorbing out-going two-dimensional waves in a uniform mean ow, governed by linearized Euler equations. It is well known that the linearized Euler equations support acoustic waves, which travel with the speed of sound relati...

Perfectly Matched Layers for Hyperbolic Systems: General Formulation, Well-posedness, and Stability

Since its introduction the Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) has proven to be an accurate and robust method for domain truncation in computational electromagnetics. However, the mathematical analysis of PMLs has been limted to special cases. In particular, the basic question of whether or not a stable PML exists for arbitrary wave propagation problems remains unanswered. In this work we develop gen...

Perfectly Matched Layers equations for 3D acoustic wave propagation in heterogeneous media

This work is dedicated to the analysis of Berenger PML method applied to the 3D linearized Euler equations without advection terms, with variable wave velocity and acoustic impedance. It is an extension of a previous work presented in a 2D context [8]. The 3D linearized Euler equations are used to simulate propagation of acoustic waves beneath the subsurface. We propose an analysis of these equ...
